REPORT: Spireites fall to late defeat against Bromley

The Ravens maintained their unbeaten record against Chesterfield by claiming a 2-1 win at the Technique Stadium.

Michael Cheek put his side ahead in the first half but after Laurence Maguire's equaliser it was the Spirietes who looked most likely to win it, however Joe Kizzi's 86th minute header meant all three points would go back to South London.

James Rowe made three changes to the side that were held to a draw in midweek. Jack Clarke, Liam Mandeville and Josef Yarney came in to replace Tom Whelan, Akwasi Asante and Gavin Gunning.

The Ravens had the first opportunity of the game in the 6th minute when Kizzi broke free at the far post to get his head on a free-kick however the defender could only find the side netting with his header.

A few minutes later Chesterfield nearly went ahead. Kairo Mitchell held the ball up well in the area and found Curtis Weston whose strike was deflected towards goal. Millermetres from going over the line, the ball was cleared by Kizzi.

In the 19th minute Michael Cheek got his 21st goal of the season when he latched onto Billy Bingham’s through ball and slotted past Grant Smith to put his side into the lead.

Chesterfield had numerous chances to get back on level terms. First Clarke saw his effort gathered by Cousins, then skipper Chris Bush made a crucial block to deny Laurence Maguire.

In the 30th minute the Spireites hit the post when George Carline’s long throw was headed powerfully by Fraser Kerr.

The last big chance before the break came in the 39th minute when Mandeville broke down the left and played the ball into Clarke who found Mitchell but he dragged his shot wide.

The home side failed to really get going in what was a stop-start second half until Nathan Tyson and Tom Whelan were introduced.

Chesterfield came close to an equaliser in the 70th minute when Kerr rose highest to Whelan's corner. The defender's header forced Bromley keeper Cousins into a smart low save.

However five minutes later it was Maguire who put the Spireites back on level terms. He brought the ball down magnificently to smash a volley into the far corner of the net.

In the 86th minute the visitors restored their lead. Defender Kizzi met a superb cross from substitute Frankie Raymond at the far post and headed past Smith.

Chesterfield fell to their first defeat in seven in a game which Spirietes boss James Rowe felt his side should have had two ‘stonewall’ penalties.

Chesterfield (3-4-2-1): Smith; Yarney, Kerr, Maguire (C); Carline, Weston (M Smith), Oyeleke, Whittle; Clarke (Tyson 63’), Mandeville (Whelan 68’); Mitchell
